The Scoop
The Salton Sea is one of the most unique locations I've visited on planet earth. It's locted about 45 minutes south of Palm Springs, smack dab in the middle of the California desert, not the kind of place you expect to see any body of water.
The Ssalton Sea is a mann made lake “by accident”. It was created when the Colorado River floodwater breached an irrigation canal being constructed in the Imperial Valley in 1905 and flowed into the Salton Sink.
I’ve been shooting at this location for over a dozen years. It’s beautiful anytime of the year and offers some of the best sunsets you’ll see anywhere in the world.
While there is still a consiferably learge body of water there as of 2023, the water has continued to recede which leaves a very dry cracked earth where there used to be water.
The main area of the Salton Sea experience is Bombay Beach where you will find a small number of Airbnb’s that you can crash in when going for a creative excursion.
So why is it so alluring? The desert landscape mixed with a backdrop of an ocean size body of water that’s virtually 100% still is just surreal. This has lead to the Salton Sea being a mecca for artists of all kinds. These artists bring many different pieces of work including things like swinsets set up in the actual water which is amazing to shoot. There are also many abandoned buildings, old boats, ships and such that are near Bombay Beach or the water.
\It’s also a beautiful place for astrophotography. Just be careful to not get your car stuck in the mud! It’s best to stay on the paths unless you have some serious off road equipment. I’ll be shooting here until the day I die. I just love this magical place.
