The Scoop

Six Flags New Orleans, also known as Jazzland, is my favorite abandoned location on the planet. It was a working amusement park located in East New Orleans that was tragically wiped away by Hurricane Katrina along with a vast numbers of homes, neighborhoods and more during the devastating storm.

After the storm the park fell into neglect and disrepair as the Six Flags Company saw the park as a total loss at which point they sought to get out of their lease agreement with the city of New Orleans, which then became the custodian of the derelict and unusable amusement park.

Following the storm “Jazzland” became a mecca of sorts for Urban Explorers and Photographers alike who were eager to get a glimpse of this location that quickly climbed the unofficial charts of one of the most iconic abandoned places on the planet to explore and shoot.

My first visit to Jazzland took place in December 2013 where I flew to New Orleans with absolutely no guarantee if I could even gain access to the site to explore and shoot.

Upon driving from New Orleans over to the park area I was amazed at the devatsation that still existed and the disrepair that was present not only inside the park but also in the surrounding neighboarhood as well. This was 8 full years after it had sat vacant and the area was still so devastated that it was hard to comprehend.

My visits have continued since 2013 until the present day as I have been fascinated by the location as well as seeing how it’s changed over the part decade. My visits have also been met by run in’s with the police, security guards, and other visitors who didn’t have the same intentions that I had to just document the park.

It has also been home to many major motion picture shoots over the years which has also made it more difficult for photographers like myself to access the park as it’s status as a icon in the Urban Explorer world has become even more well known.

It’s been a dream of mine to do whatever I can to help this place see creation, laughter and life again.
